We have two secluded gîtes in the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park of the Auvergne which is in the Massif Central of France. They are privately owned by different families and were bought and renovated for personal use as second homes. Because of this the level of equipment and décor is designed for the comfort of a family second home which makes either ideal for renting for your holiday in France.

The two houses are quite different and each has its own character and charm. They are 15 minutes walk from each other and so would be ideal for two families wanting to stay close to but not "on top of" one another.

Gîte 1 (sleeps 6+) has three double bedrooms each with a double bed. Arrangements can be made for a cot. There is one bathroom with shower and toilet. The entrance floor is designed as an open plan area with kitchen, dining room and sitting room in one large space. There is a wood burning stove for winter heating. The kitchen is furnished with electric oven and hob.

There is about half an acre of garden including patio areas to sit out and eat in the warm summer evenings. There are spaces to sit around the house that catch the sun whatever time of the day.

The gîte is situated in a secluded forested area on the side of a hill and enjoys calm and quiet nearly all the time. There is one neighbouring house on this site.

There is a footpath going past the house down through the forest (and towards gîte 2) and this is used by occasional walkers or bikers. The silence is generally only interrupted by wildlife noises.

The gîte is accessed by an unmade track which can be difficult to negotiate in some 2 wheel drive cars though a 4x4 will have no problems. There is parking space at the top of the track and a 200 metre (2 minute) walk down to the house. In practice we have never found this a problem but rather it adds to the charm and seclusion of the site.

Gîte 2 sleeps (6+) offers two double bedrooms on the first floor; bedroom 1 has a double bed plus a small infant bed, bedroom 2 has a double bed. On the second floor there is a large room with twin beds and a double bed-settee. The ground floor comprises a bathroom with shower and separate w.c., large dining-kitchen and separate lounge-dining room with access to patio and gardens. There is an open fire and central heating for colder months. Also on the ground floor is an additional room currently used as a games room.

The gîte enjoys wonderful views and has large sunny gardens with patios and a BBQ area. There is ample off road parking.

This gîte is located in a small rural hamlet approximately 5 minutes drive from the nearest village where there is a boulangerie, small grocers shop and a restaurant.

There are numerous waymarked footpaths of varying lengths , many of which give views of the Puy de Dôme (the best known and most recognisable of the volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys d'Auvergne).

If you want to chill out and read, listen to music or walk in beautiful countryside (or indeed mountain bike or even cross-country ski December to March) then this is the place for you. If you want the beach and nightlife then forget it! The only disturbing noises come from owls at night. Towns and cities close by include Ambert with a great market in summer (25 minutes), Thiers the cutlery capital of France (45 minutes) and Vichy (70 minutes). The nearest villages are about 5 and 10 minutes drive.
The views of the forests and mountains of the Livradois Forez are enchanting. There is some lovely wildlife to be seen including deer, red squirrels and wild boar. There are always birds of prey overhead calling to one another. The Gîtes are in the mountains of the Auvergne at 700 and 800 metres above sea level. Climate can be quite variable but the main experience has been hot sunny days and cool (insect free) evenings in the summer. Thunderstorms (sometimes spectacular) aren't uncommon but are usually short-lived. In winter, temperatures are often below freezing and there is reliable snow for cross-country skiing about 10 miles away. There are also some downhill pistes about 15 miles away.
