Rambling and Canoeing

Barjac is set in the middle of the Ardeche/Cevenne/Provence triangle and La Maison Ames in the hamlet of Saint Privat de Champclos is ideally situated as a base for rambling holidays with many circular walks marked on local maps on our doorstep between the rivers Ardeche and Ceze.

Only 20 minute drive from the villa takes you to either river where canoes can be hired by the hour or by the day. Canoeing down the Ardeche from Vallon Pont D'arc takes you under the world famous Pont d'Arc and the next 35 kilometers can be canoed over one or two days taking you over several small rapids.

The Ceze is a more tranquil river where many birds such as heron and kingfisher can normally be spotted. Ramblers may wish to follow the path of Robert Louise Stevenson who walked through the Cevennes mountains with his donkey Modestine, or walk through the Ceze or Ardeche gorges where there are many prehistoric caves to be explored.

There is a temporary exhibition at Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc, close by to La Maison Ames, which will tell you about the amazing discovery in 1994 of paintings on the walls in the Chauvet Grotto in shades of ochre, black and red, of more than 300 creatures, unique in the world, which were painted more than 30,000 years ago by Cro-Magnon men, well before the Lascaux.

Touring & Cycling

Bicycles are available for hire at the villa if booked in advance but allocating time to tour the region by car is recommended so taking in the many famous surrounding towns such as Avignon, Orange, Nimes, Arles which have many well preserved Roman buildings.

The famous three tier Pont du Gard aqueduct near Avignon, coliseum and amphitheatre at Nimes are a must. Next to the Roman theatre at Arles [still used for bull fights] a town that Van Gogh and Picasso visited is the Musee Reattu where you will find rough doodles and pencil sketches by Picasso.

The Mediterranean coast has a lot to offer including visiting the Carmarge where you look out for its pink flamingos and roaming white horses.
