There are many historic towns within easy reach
such as Blaye, Cognac, Jonzac and Saintes. The area is rich in antiquities
including monolithic and mediaeval churches, a magnificent Roman amphitheatre
at Saintes and one of Vauban's finest fortresses ay Blaye.
The coves at Meschers and the
wide sandy beaches of St Georges de Didonne and Royan provide safe bathing
for young children.
There are riding stables and
also golf within half an hour.
We recommend an excursion to
the zoo at Palmyre and the sand dunes and Atlantic rollers by the Courbe
lighthouse.
The chateaux (and wines) of
the Medoc peninsula, worth a day's outing, are just across the Gironde,
by ferry from Royan or Blaye, or by car via Bordeaux.
Bird watching on the Marais
- storks nested here last year and a variety of raptors are always about
and hoopoes and golden orioles have been seen from the terrace.
Nearby are excellent restaurants,
either by the waterways leading to the estuary or inland, fish and shellfish
prominent on the menus. But to sit on the terrace in the silence, with
a glass of wine and to watch the light change in the valley as evening
approaches, is excitement enough for many.
Les Marechaux was converted
ten years ago from a simple farmhouse and barns to a luxurious family
house sleeping 11 in comfort in 5 bedrooms.
The house is on a hillside on
the edge of a small hamlet, surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers
with extensive rural views.
Mirambeau, our market town,
is about ten minutes drive away with excellent shops, supermarket, bank
and bars.
Bordeaux International Airport
is 50 minutes drive and Royan 30 minutes drive. The Motorway connection
is ten minutes away. |
