Village L'Oritel is a small
Normandy hamlet set in a beautiful valley near the market town of Gavray
and the elegant seaside town, Granville. The cottage is tucked away on
the edge of the village in approximately two and a half acres. Built in
the 17th century, it is spacious and comfortably furnished.
Downstairs is a comfortable
sitting room with an open stone fireplace, woodburning stove, settee and
some antique chairs. A kitchen/diner seats four, with french doors opening
onto a garden terrace with views over the valley and a beautiful pond.
The staircase leads upstairs
to a bedroom with a double bed, dressing table, and hanging wardrobes.
An en-suite bathroom has a French hip bath with shower (classic deep,
short bath with a seat) and washbasin. Stairs lead from the main bedroom
to a large attic bedroom with 2 single beds and a very low beam! Bed linen
(sheets and duvets), tea towels and tablecloths are provided. You will
need to bring your own personal towels.
The cottage is within easy reach
by car from the ferry ports of Cherbourg (about 1 hour 30 mins), Caen
(about 1 hour 20 mins), and St. Malo (about 2 hours).
Adjacent to the cottage is a
studio where textile artist Pat O'Neill creates stunning rag rugs and
wall hangings.

Normandy is one of the most
historic and interesting areas of France, with peaceful rolling countryside,
seaside resorts and pretty fishing villages, dramatic chalk cliffs with
ancient stone chateaux and fortresses, thatched cottages and farmhouses
with orchards. In spring the hedgerows
are full of wild flowers and the orchards burst with apple blossom.
The essence of Normandy is its
produce: This is the land of butter and cream, famous cheeses and seafood.
Normandy supplies nearly half of France's dairy products and is famous
for Camembert, a cheese best eaten when soft in the centre, not runny.
Much of the local cuisine includes creamy sauces. Cider and Calvados (apple
brandy) are made in the region, and Pommeau is a sweet, popular aperitif
made from a mixture of the two. Another area specialty is 'agneau pre
sale' which can be found in some small coastal villages. It is lamb that
has been fed on salt marshes by the sea. Oyster beds can also be found
along the coast, with many good seafood restaurants in the area.
Normandy is beautiful in the
spingtime with temperatures of 13°-17°C (55°-63°F) in April and May, and
wildflowers and blossom appear all over the countryside. The summer, June
through September, averages 20°-21°C (68°-70°F). June, July and August
are generally the best months, and the weather can be changeable in September.
October is cooler, averaging 15°C (60°F).
Local towns for Village L'Oritel
are Gavray (5 mins) a pretty market town; Granville (20 mins), an elegant
seaside town; Villedieu-les-Poeles (20 mins), a centre for copper and
pewter working; Avranches (30 mins), the gateway to Brittany; and, of
course, Mont St. Michel. To the north is Bayeux (1 hr) with its wonderful
tapestry and lace museum and the Normandy landing beaches. Villedieu also
has a bell foundry (one of only two in France) with daily guided tours.
Boat tours can be arranged from Granville to the Iles des Chassey and
the Channel Islands, and there are plenty of clean, sandy beaches near
the town. Mont St. Michel has an ancient Christian church and fortress
built on a rocky site where, in 708 AD, the Archangel Michael is said
to have appeared. Coutances has a cathedral and museum, public gardens,
and a market on Thursday.
All the local towns have weekly
markets - the best is probably at Villedieu on Tuesdays. There are excellent
and reasonable restaurants in the area, including one just up the lane
in Mesnil Rogues. |
